Mother's Day

Mother’s day 2023 – a journey around the world

Since ancient times people all over the world are honouring their mothers on special occasion. These were the beginnings of a National Mother’s Day. How is Mother’s Day currently celebrated in various countries? We had a look around for you and found the following.

1: Germany

In Germany, “Muttertag” Mother’s Day is traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday in May. On this special day, mothers are given flowers, chocolates, or gifts they have designed themselves as a sign of appreciation for their commitment to their children and family as she is a central part of everyone’s live. Mother’s Day is used to spend some extra quality time with them. They are taken out for lunch or dinner, so they have a rest from traditional kitchen and household duties, or just a break together. A popular destination for Mother’s Day in Germany is the flower island of Mainu on the shores of Lake Constance. Discover Germany and the Island of Mainau here.

2: Austria

In Austria too, Mother’s Day is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Like Germany, flowers and pieces of bast are given away as signs and affection. But also having lunch together or breakfast in bed are courtesies to express gratitude. Explore Austria.

3: Switzerland

In Switzerland, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the same day, the second Sunday in May. A perfect opportunity to say thank you to “sim mami” (his or her mother). A trip together is always a successful idea. Especially in spring, nature shows itself from a particularly beautiful side. A trip together with “sim mami”, e.g., a Mother’s Day brunch in a mountain restaurant with an impressive view, is a treat. Get inspiration for a Switzerland trip.

4: Liechtenstein

As Liechtenstein is surrounded by Switzerland and Austria the Tradition of Mother’s Day are very similar. Make Mum the central part of the day and show your love and appreciation in a respectful and loving manner.

5: Samoa

Mother’s Day in Samoa is a public holiday on the Monday after the second Sunday in May. Samoa holds a very special place for mothers and their role in the community. One day has been allocated and approved by the Government to be observed as Mother’s Day. The celebrations usually consist of the mothers and families attending church services in the morning with a big feast to be followed soon after.

6: Vanuatu

The goal of Mother’s Day is to let Mum know just how much she is loved and appreciated by the members of her family for all that she does. Enjoy a church service together and be surrounded by the ones you love and have a lot of laughter to make it a memorable day.

7: New Zealand

In New Zealand, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the 2nd Sunday of May. It is an annual special occasion – but it is not a public holiday. Mother’s Day is the perfect day to show your appreciation and love to her. Children preparing breakfast or taking over the household chores for the day is lovely for children to demonstrate the appreciation of their mother’s hard work the whole year, keeping the family together and setting the base so that everyone feels home. Flowers and other gifts are given to mothers on Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day as an expression of gratitude and family awareness

Even though Mother’s Day is celebrated  in different settings, cultures, countries and families, it is an overarching and predominant expression of gratitude towards mother’s and family awareness. You only have one Mother, so show respect and celebrate this special day as it will give all some beautiful memories and makes mother’s feel extra special as we all know they deserve it. With this in mind, we wish you a happy Mother’s Day
