The Story of the Trapp Family
“The Sound of Music” is based on the true story of the von Trapp family from Salzburg. Based on the book “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers”, the movie is about a young woman who leaves a convent to become a governess to the seven children of a widowed naval officer. In 1923, Georg Ritter von Trapp moved with his seven children into a villa in the Aigen neighbourhood of Salzburg. Maria Augusta Kutschera worked as a maid for Georg Ritter von Trapp, when his nine-year-old daughter began to fall ill. In 1927 the father married Maria and had three children together. In 1935 von Trapp lost his entire fortune due to bad speculation by his bank. To make an income the world-famous choir was established. In 1938, the Trapp family has left Austria after Hitler’s annexation of Austria and emigrated to the United States. Their success in the USA proved to be enough to allow them to settle there.
