Berchtesgadener Land: Underrated filming location for “The Sound of Music”

The world`s most successful musical film “The Sound of Music” from 1965 attracts more than 300,000 visitors from around the world to discover filming locations in and around Salzburg, Austria. Salzburg is THE “Sound of Music” city there is no doubt.  The “von Trapp” family once lived in Salzburg and most scenes of this movie classic were filmed in and around Salzburg. Lake Königssee & Obersee, Berchtesgaden National Park

Arial views of Lake Königssee and Obersee catching the attention of numerous “Sound of Music” fans during the opening scenes. Königssee and Obersee are located in the heart of the Berchtesgaden National Park – which is Germany’s only Alpine National Park. Majestic mountain peaks, deep valleys and crystal-clear Alpine lakes define this protected area bordering Austria. After majestic views of snow-clad mountains and imposing valleys, the classic view of Lake Konigsee with the St. Bartholomew peninsula and the Schönfeldspitze Mountain, as well as  general view of Obersee can be seen in the movie.

Tipp: Embark on a boat trip with an electric passenger boat on the emerald green waters of Lake Königssee. In St. Bartholomä, a visit to the historic pilgrimage church and a walk along the shore are a must. St. Bartholomew the lovely pilgrimage church is world-renowned for its wine-red onion domes.

Höglwörth Abbey near Anger

The Höglwörth Abbey, the former Augustinian monastery of Höglwörth, is representing the ancient abbey’s idyllic location from a bird’s eye view. Remarkable locations such as the idyllic the Höglwörth Abbey near Anger helped to represent the pristine alpine region with imposing mountains, dense forests and alpine lakes, where the von Trapp Family once lived.

Tipp: Take the Höglwörth Monastery loop from Anger and go an easy 1.5-hour hike to enjoy stunning  mountains views and admire the picturesque Höglwörth Abbey.

Rossfeld

The movie’s closing scenes were filmed on the crest of Mt Rossfeld. The backdrop of majestic Mt Hoher Göll and the Purtschellerhaus showing captain von Trapp carrying Gretl on his back as he leads the family through the greenery of a flowering alpine meadow. The Sound of Music’s emotional film finale is showing the von Trapps walking along a ridge, while in the distance we make out the “Eagle’s Nest” (Kehlsteinhaus), the Reiteralpe & Untersberg mountains.
