GRAND TRAIN TOUR OF SWITZERLAND
Day 1: Zurich - Lucerne - Interlaken
Welcome to Switzerland! Begin your journey with a train ride from Zurich to Lucerne. Continue your journey aboard the Lucerne–Interlaken Express, one of Switzerland’s most scenic regional trains. Travel through a landscape of sparkling lakes, lush valleys, waterfalls and mountain panoramas as you make your way to Interlaken, beautifully set between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.
Depending on your arrival time, this day program can be adjusted to your specific needs and wishes. Additional nights in Zurich can be added. Additional nights in any other stop along the itinerary, as well as extra excursions and experiences, can also be arranged to fully tailor your journey.
Day 2: Interlaken - GoldenPass Express - Montreux
After breakfast, board the spectacular GoldenPass Express and travel through the heart of the Swiss Alps. Admire sweeping views of the Bernese Oberland with its dramatic peaks, alpine meadows, dense forests and traditional wooden chalets. Pass through charming Zweisimmen and the elegant resort region of Gstaad before descending towards Lake Geneva. As the landscape softens, palm trees and vineyards appear, revealing the Mediterranean-inspired atmosphere of the Swiss Riviera. Arrival in Montreux, an elegant lakeside town famous for its annual Jazz Festival, lakeside promenade and breathtaking views across Lake Geneva.
Day 3: Montreux - Zermatt
Travel by train from Montreux to Zermatt, this world-renowned mountain resort is nestled at the foot of the majestic Matterhorn. The journey leads you through Rhône Valley landscapes and alpine scenery before arriving in this charming car-free village. Zermatt offers an immediate sense of mountain magic, where traditional chalets and the dramatic silhouette of the Matterhorn create an unforgettable alpine atmosphere.
Day 4: Zermatt - Glacier Express - St. Moritz
Board the legendary Glacier Express, one of the world’s most iconic train journeys. Travel in panoramic comfort through the heart of the Swiss Alps, crossing deep valleys, dramatic gorges, soaring viaducts and snow-covered peaks. Known as the “slowest express train in the world”, this journey is a moving panorama of Switzerland’s most spectacular landscapes. Arrival in St. Moritz, the elegant alpine resort famous for its luxury, winter sports heritage and stunning mountain surroundings.
Day 5: St. Moritz - Bernina Express - Lugano
Embark on the breathtaking Bernina Express, travelling south through dramatic Alpine scenery. Pass shimmering Lago Bianco, the impressive Morteratsch Glacier and the high Bernina Pass, before reaching the circular viaduct of Brusio and the Italian-speaking town of Tirano. From here, continue by bus through scenic landscapes back into Switzerland and arrive in Lugano, a beautiful lakeside city where alpine mountains meet Mediterranean charm. Enjoy the evening at leisure along the lake promenade.
Day 6: Lugano - Gotthard Panorama Express - Lucerne
Travel on the historic Gotthard Panorama Express, following the legendary Gotthard route through mountain tunnels and valleys to Flüelen. Continue your journey aboard a classic steamboat across Lake Lucerne, passing historic villages and stunning mountain scenery. Arrival in Lucerne, where the Alpine landscape meets one of Switzerland’s most charming cities. You may wish to explore the charming Old Town with its frescoed buildings and cobbled streets, or visit the iconic Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), considered one of the oldest wooden bridges in Europe.
Day 7: Lucerne - Voralpen-Express - St. Gallen
Board the scenic Voralpen-Express and travel through central and eastern Switzerland. Pass rolling hills, Lake Zurich and the picturesque town of Rapperswil before continuing through the Appenzell region to St. Gallen.Arrive in the historic city of St. Gallen, known for its UNESCO-listed Abbey District and rich cultural heritage.
Day 8: St. Gallen - Schaffhausen - Zurich
Travel to Schaffhausen and experience the spectacular Rhine Falls, Europe’s largest waterfall, where powerful waters thunder over the cliffs. Continue by train to Zurich, where your unforgettable Swiss journey concludes.
