Heidiland

Heidiland: A Family Trip To Switzerland

The diverse region “Heidiland” between “Lake Walen” and the “Sarganser Land” in Eastern Switzerland gets its name from Johanna Spyri’s world-famous story “Heidi”, who was an orphan and got sent to live with her grandfather to live in the Swiss Alps. Heidi has been inspiring children all over the world for decades and also makes adults’ hearts beat faster. We love Switzerland for families. We especially love the “Heidiland” region in Eastern Switzerland for its wide variety of activities for all ages and interests. There is so much to see in the homeland of Heidi. Here are some inspiring recommendations for your family trip to Switzerland.

1: Heidi’s Homeland

The Heidi Village in Maienfeld attracts visitors from all over the world and allows guests to immerse themselves into the era when the children’s story was written by Johanna Spyri. Embark on a family adventure  through Switzerland’s incredible scenery and follow Heidi’s footsteps. Immerse yourself in the world of Heidi while visiting HEIDI’S homeland Switzerland.  Follow the Heidi Trail to visit Heidi’s original house and enjoy the path she used to walk from the village to her grandfather house up on the mountain. Heidi’s homeland can be visited all year round.

2: Tamina Gorge

The “Tamina Valley” with the impressive “Tamina Gorge” was shaped by an arm of the Rhine glacier. In 1240 two hunters from “Pfäfers Abbey” discovered the healing benefits of the body warmth waters of the “Tamina Gorge”. Take a pleasant one-hour walk from Bad Ragaz to “Altes Bad Pfäfers”. This track takes you under the largest arched bridge in Switzerland, the “Tamina Bridge”. The “Tamina Gorge” opens from April to October and is suitable for families with children from 6 years of age.

3: Sargans Castle

“Sargans Castle”, sits on a rock above the old town of Sargans and takes visitors on a journey back to the 13th century. The “Sarganser Land Museum” is located within the tower of “Sargans Castle”, where you can learn about history, sights and customs of the “Sarganserland”. Enjoy impressive views, discover the secluded castles courtyard and explore the wonderful wine cellar including its ancient wine press. A walk through the picturesque little town of Sargans is the perfect round up to a visit of the castle! Make sure to visit the narrow alleyways below the castle to enjoy this truly unique atmosphere. The “Sargans Castle” can be visited all year round and is suitable for families and children from 6 years of age.

4: A Family Winter Adventure at Flumsberg and Pizol

For those who want to experience the region of “Heidiland” during the European Winter, family friendly ski areas and accommodations are awaiting in Eastern Switzerland. High above the “Lake Walen” the Flumserberg ski area and the ski area Pizol are inviting families to enjoy an unforgettable winter holiday in Switzerland.

At the Flumserberg ski area kids and teens can choose from a variety of skiing options. The “Adventure Slopes” are waiting to be explored by the little ones while the family snow park is inviting teenagers to test their skills in a safe manner. The ski area “Pizol” impresses with magnificent mountain views up to 2,222 metres above sea level. At “Kinderland”  in “Pardiel” first timers can learn how to ski and snowboard. For the adventurous ones take the mountains-tobogganing run to immerse yourself in Switzerland’s winter wonderland. The whole area “Pizol” is especially fun for families, where you can ski with your children, while parents will be deeply relaxed.
